Venezuela thrilled their home crowd once again after escaping with a thrilling 70-65 win over Dominican Republic in day three of Group B action of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship in Caracas.

Coming from a morale-boosting 75-70 win over Paraguay on Saturday night, Venezuela had a great start on Sunday night, building a 20-12 lead after the first period to take control of the match.

Dominican Republic, who had a rousing 91-72 win over Argentina in their tournament debut, pulled within five points, 28-23, in the 4:30 mark of the second quarter, but Venezuela pulled away anew, taking a 10-point lead heading into the half-time break.

Venezuela successfully protected the lead in the third period before Dominican Republic made a huge run in the final period.

Down 53-42 at the beginning of the final canto, Dominican Republic unleashed a 20-9 run to tie the game at 62 with only 2:49 left in the game.

However, the host country countered with a 6-0 run to put the momentum on their side with a 68-62 advantage with 20 seconds left to play in the match. Venezuela held on to the lead until the final buzzer sounded to the delight of the crowd inside the jam-packed Poliedro.

Donta Smith led Venezuela’s offensive attack with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists, while also doing his job on the defensive end of the floor with his three steals. David Cubillan added 19 points and seven rebounds, while Rafael Perez chipped in 11 points off the bench.

With the win, host country Venezuela are now on top of Group B with their 2-1 record, while Dominican Republic are tied with Argentina (1-1) for the third spot in the group.

Venezuela will look to sustain the momentum when they go up against defending champions Argentina, while Dominican Republic will look to rebound from the loss when they face Mexico on Monday night.
