batista postBrazil head into the tournament with a lot of hopes but they are now on the verge of getting eliminated in the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship For Men after absorbing their third-straight defeat.

Uruguay withstood several comeback attempts and held on to a huge 79-73 win over Brazil in the second to the last day of preliminary round actions in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament in Caracas, Venezuela.

Esteban Batista rose to occasion for Uruguay as he finished with 22 points, while also adding 13 rebounds and two steals for Venezuela, who kept the Brazilians at bay for almost the entire match.

Brazil took a 4-2 lead at the 8:31 mark of the first period, but Uruguay wrestled control from that point, taking the lead one minute later and never let the Brazilians get a taste of the lead again for the entire match.

Uruguay almost succumbed to the pressure in the final period though. After taking an 11-point lead with only 9:21 left to play in the game, Brazil pulled within one point, 63-62, in the 5:37 mark of the game.

Good thing for them, they were able to regroup quickly and unleashed an 8-0 run to get a lot of breathing room and held on to the hard-earned victory, which is their second win in three games.

Leandro Garcia also had a productive night for Uruguay with 16 points to go along with six rebounds, while Nicolas Mazzarino added 14 points.

With the win, Uruguay solidified their grip on the third spot in Group A behind Puerto Rico and Canada, while Brazil dropped to 0-3 – tied for the last spot in their group.

Uruguay will face Canada on Tuesday with the winner taking the second spot in the group, while Brazil and Jamaica will collide for fourth and final ticket to the second round of the tournament.
