Brazil Completes 2013 FIBA Americas First Round Sweep With 97-45 Rout Of Mexico

Brazil postBrazil have already clinched the top spot in Group A and a spot in the semifinals, but they did not slow down in the final day of the first round of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Women.

The defending champions displayed their deadly form anew as they scored an impressive 97-45 romp host Mexico on Wednesday night in Xalapa, Mexico.

Egged on by the partisan crowd in Xalapa, the Mexicans had a promising start but Brazil quickly got into their rhythm and build a 23-14 lead after the first period.

The Brazilian squad then stepped on the gas on the defensive end of the floor in the second period, tallying total of seven steals and had 17 fastbreak points. Brazil led by as much as 17 points before ending the half with a 48-32 advantage.

The second half followed the same storyline as the first half as Brazil continued to pound on the Mexicans on both ends of the floor en route to the dominating 52-point victory.

Patricia Texeira led five double-digit scorers for Brazil with 15 points to go along with five assists, Tatiane Pacheco added 14 points. Damiris Dantas Do Amaral and Nadia Gomes Colhado added 12 points apiece, while Clarissa Dos Santos had a double-double performance with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Brazil, which ruled the last two editions of the FIBA Americas, will look to advance to the finals when they take on Cuba in the semifinals on Friday. Canada, which also went undefeated in their first four games this season, will face Puerto Rico in the other semi-final pairing.

Brazil Defeats Argentina 69-60 To Reach 2013 FIBA Americas For Women Semifinals

BrazilBrazil formalized their entry into the semifinals of the 2013 FIBA Americas For Women after winning their third-straight win as many games in the tournament currently being held in Mexico.

The Brazilian squad moved closer to successfully defending their title after escaping with a hard-earned 69-60 win over Argentina on Wednesday night in Xalapa, Mexico.

In a rematch of the finals of the past two editions of the FIBA Americas for Women, the defending champions started out strong with a 10-3 run, but Argentina countered with their own 9-3 blast to end the first period with a 19-18 lead.

Brazil took control in the second period anew as they took a 33-27 lead heading into the half-time break. The break did not slow them down as the increased their lead to nine points, 54-45, heading into the final period.

In the final period, Argentina stunned the Brazilians as they got into their groove. The Argentineans unleashed a 12-2 rally to take a one-point lead, 57-56 – their first taste of the lead in the second half. However, Brazil answered back and kept their opponents at bay en route to the 69-60 win.

Damiris Dantas Do Amaral had a double-double performance with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Karla Cristina Martins Da Costa and Clarissa Cristina Dos Santos added 13 and 12 points apiece.

With the win, Brazil clinched the first spot in Group A and will go up either against Canada or Cuba in the semifinals. Argentina, on the other hand, will wait and see how the final day will transpire to know their fate in this year’s tournament.
