Dominican Republic Snags 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup Spot With 86-78 Win Over Uruguay

jack martinez 2The Dominican Republic sustained their momentum on Sunday as they cruised to an 86-78 victory over Uruguay in the final day of the second round of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Men in Venezuela.

With everything to lose against a team out of contention for the World Cup spot, Dominican Republic kept their composure and controlled the tempo for the majority of the match.

Uruguay had their chances to steal one from the red-hot Dominicana when they took a 23-17 lead in the second quarter, but they faded right after that point. Dominican Republic unleashed a huge 13-2 run to take a 30-25 lead.

Uruguay managed to tie the game several times, but Dominican Republic looked very determined to earn a ticket to Spain next year. The two teams traded baskets after baskets in the final period, but Dominican Republic had the better of that exchange, building a 78-68 lead en route to the huge victory.

The win helped the Dominican Republic advance to the semifinals of the 2013 FIBA Americas, which also gave them one of the four tickets to the Basketball World Cup next year.

Jack Martinez was the star of the night for Dominican Republic as he posted a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. James Feldeine scored 14 points, while Eloy Vargas and Eulis Baes added 13 points and seven rebounds each for Dominican Republic.

Esteban Batista had 22 points and 13 rebounds, but it was not enough to help Uruguay end the tournament on a winning note.
