Dominican Republic Routs Paraguay 83-54 In Power Outage Hit Match

dominican postThe Dominican Republic booked the final Group B ticket to the second round after scoring a dominating 83-54 victory over Paraguay in the final day of the 2013 FIBA Americas preliminary rounds on Tuesday in Caracas, Venezuela.

The Dominican Republic were comfortably ahead and headed to a blowout victory before a power outage forced the suspension of the match with 4:23 left to play. The officials eventually decided to end the match after the power was not restored, giving the victory to Dominicana, who were in control for the entire match.

With a ticket to the next round on the line, Dominican Republic did not give a chance to the winless Paraguayan squad as they quickly jumped on the gun and took a 26-9 lead after the first period. They led by as much as 29 points in the second period and never looked back to take their second win in four games.

Karl Towns led Dominican Republic with 16 points and four rebounds, while Elpidio Fortuna added 12 points and four boards. Juan Coronado and Edward Santana 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Dominican Republic, which shot an impressive 48 percent from the field.

Guillermo Araujo had another solid night for Paraguay with 26 points in 29 minutes, while Ramon Sanchez added 12 points, but this two-man effort was not enough to give Paraguay their first win in the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain next year.
