Brazil failed to defend the title but they secured a spot to the 2014 FIBA World Cup after grabbing the bronze medal in the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Women.

The Brazilians, which bagged the gold in the 2009 and 2011 editions of FIBA America, scored a hard-earned 66-56 victory over Puerto Rico in the bronze medal match.

Coming from a painful defeat to Cuba in the semifinals, Brazil had a slow start but they still managed to take a precarious 19-18 lead at the end of the first period.

After a slow start, the Brazilians shifted to next gear in the second period to take control of the game with a commanding 38-28 lead heading into the break.

Brazil controlled the pace of the game in the second half and kept the Puerto Rican squad at bay. Puerto Rico had several comeback attempts, but the Brazilians halted all of it en route to the victory.

Tatiane Pacheco had an outstanding night as she finished with 18 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists, while Clarissa Dos Santos had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Brazil.

Jazmine Sepulveda, on the other hand, led the Puerto Rican squad with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Ashley Prim and Carla Cortijo added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s tormentor in the semifinals, Cuba, bagged the gold medal in the tournament with a 79-71 victory over Canada in the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship finale.

Cuba, Canada, and Brazil all booked a ticket to next year’s FIBA World Cup that will be staged in Turkey.
