The teams above set as Qualifiers 1, 2,3, 4 & 5 will be those qualifying through the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs) in Nantes, France from June 13-19 2016. They will be drawn into the Olympic Basketball Tournament’s five (5) vacant positions following the conclusion of the last game in Nantes, France on Sunday June 19th.

Both men’s and women’s tournaments will open with a Group Phase played in a round robin format (each team faces the other five (5) in its group). The top four (4) classified teams from each group will then move on to the Final Phase which will be played in a standard knock-out system consisting of Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, Bronze Medal Game and Gold Medal Game.

They will be drawn into the Olympic Basketball Tournament’s three (3) vacant positions following the conclusion of the last game in Manila on Sunday July 10th.

Senegal Posts Big Win Over Cameroon To Win Afrobasket Will Go to Rio!

Senegal 81 – 66 Cameroon

Led by both Aya Traore and Astou Traore who combined for 33 points of the 81 team points and Aye Traore was named the Afrobasket MVP. Traore was also named to the All-Star Five Team. Senegal qualifies directly for the 2016 Rio Olympics!

China Wins Fiba Asia and Gets a Direct Ticket to Rio

China defeated the Philippines 78-67 with Yi Jianlian leading the way in MVP fashion and garnered this honor. Iran, Japan and the Philippines all booked places in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments at the 2016 Basketball Games.

Spain Dominates Lithuania and Wins Eurobasket Championship 80-63

Lithuania was no match for Spain in a final very lopsided in Spains favor. Lithuania started the game sloppy and with bad defense while Spain played practically perfect. Gasol scored 14 points in the first quarter for Spain and finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Tonights final marked another record crowd of 27,372 basketball fans.

Pau Gasol was the awarded the MVP and headed the Eurobasket All-Start Five: Sergio Rodriguez, Jonas Maciulis, Jonas Valanciunas and Nando De Colo.

Venezuela made history by winning their first ever FIBA America Championship. They played with tenacious defensive and the offense was almost perfect for a final game. Venezuela held nothing back and their direct ticket to the Rio Olympic is even sweeter with this gold medal.

Japan defeated China in the FIBA Asia Championships  (85-50) to defend title. In 2013, Japan captured the Asia Championships over Korea however not as commanding as over China.
